Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
After the scandal surrounding Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust, a further 13 hospitals across the UK have also been found to have higher than expected mortality rates, including Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs two hospitals: King's Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield and Newark Hospital.
The inquiry, headed by Robert Francis QC, has uncovered a culture focused on targets and numbers over patients and care. The result of which has been mistreatment, neglect and up to 20,000 unnecessary deaths across the country.
The Sherwood Forest Hospital Scandal
The scandal at Sherwood Forest NHS Trust revealed that for every hundred patients admitted, 13 more people died than expected on the wards, a figure calculated using a mortality indicator scale recognised in hospitals. The subsequent investigation has also revealed a serious lack of patient care and adequate treatment for patients being admitted into the hospital.
The results are especially shocking considering the hospital had already been warned about unusually high death rates from septicemia. A failure to act on previous warnings and a continuation of poor care and neglect has caused shock and outrage in the local community.
The the enquiry has left many people questioning the standard of treatment they, or their family received. Many people are turning towards to courts to claim compensation for their injuries. Compensation can help relieve the financial burden on the whole family after a long term injury, and pursuing a claim enables victims to hold a Trust accountable for grave errors. Hopefully, legal action, alongside the current investigation, will lessen the possibility of the same mistakes happening again.
