East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust
In the aftermath of the scandal at Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust, 14 hospitals were highlighted as systematically failing their patients. One of these is East Lancashire NHS Trust.
It is thought that 20,000 patients died needlessly due to severe staff shortages, staff working under pressure and a concentration on targets rather than patient care. Across the country, hospitals have been struggling to deliver basic care, which has led to patients developing serious complications and even dying.
East Lancashire NHS Scandal
East Lancashire Hospital was highlighted in the investigation after its mortality rates were found to be above expected levels. Such failings were of significant importance, not only because of the unnecessary loss of life, but also because the hospital had been struggling to maintain an acceptable standard of care for the last five years.
The Summary Hospital-Level Mortality Indicator (SHMI) reveals that East Lancashire Hospital has a mortality rate which is 13% higher than the national average. It is believed that 300 more people died last year on the wards than would be expected. The hospital has the second highest difference between actual deaths and what should be expected out of all 14 hospitals currently being investigated. Board members of East Lancashire NHS Trust have also suggested the higher than average death rates could be due to an above average level of deprivation in the local area.
Such a large difference between expected and actual death rates causes concern for those who have been patients at East Lancashire NHS Trust and who felt that they received undignified or negligent treatment, and in particular for families who lost loved ones who were receiving treatment. The results have had major implications including unnecessary fatalities and undignified treatment for patients on the ward.
