North Cumbria University Hospitals
North Cumbria University Hospitals have death rates which are “worryingly high” according to the Dr Foster Research Unit Grading Scale. The hospital has been put under scrutiny following the investigation into the scandal at Mid Staffordshire NHS Trust. Since that inquiry, 14 more hospitals have been found to be failing patients with poor standards of care, mistreatment and high mortality rates.
The scandal surrounding all of the NHS hospitals is said to be a result of seriously low staffing levels, staff working under immense pressure and a culture of achieving targets over patient care. The results have led to grave errors, complications and fatalities, causing up to 20,000 deaths across the 14 hospitals in the last 10 years.
North Cumbria NHS Scandal
The two hospitals, Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, were picked up on for their above average mortality rates occurring both on the wards and up to 30 days after being discharged as well as a low efficiency rating in treating patients.
North Cumbria NHS Trust had already been investigated prior to this scandal. More than 1,100 deaths at the hospitals were reviewed as a concern. However, this investigation will address why the hospitals have a higher ratio of deaths compared to the national average; 18 more people died in North Cumbria between 2011 and 2012, per every 100 patients admitted, than the average figure.
The hospital is currently set to merge with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in a bid to quash any further issues in the hospital. The concern is that the hospital would struggle to overturn its reputation as a failing hospital and patients would continue to suffer. The negligence that occurred on the wards included medical error, avoidable deaths and a lack of basic care and treatment for patients on the wards. The investigation and legal action from patients are helping to hold the Trusts responsible for their actions.
