Medway NHS Foundation Trust, Kent
Medway NHS Foundation Trust in Kent is being investigated after figures revealed higher than average death rates, poor care and neglect across the wards.
Since the original scandal at the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust broke, a full scale inquiry has been conducted which has named several other hospitals as similarly problematic. The investigation estimates that inadequate treatment has led to an unnecessary 20,000 deaths, and has also revealed that countless more people may have suffered injuries and neglect on the wards of 14 NHS hospitals.
Medway NHS Trust Scandal
The Medway Trust, which runs Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, is one of 12 hospitals which have the highest death rates in the country. Figures released in 2011 revealed the hospital had 1,745 deaths in a year – 238 more than officials would expect.
Medway Trust was set to merge with Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust in the near future, but since the scandal broke, the plans to merge have been put on hold. In 2012, it was revealed that Medway Hospital was one of four in Kent which had to pay out for double the number of compensation claims against the trust over the last seven years as a result of medical negligence.
Many patients are taking legal action against the hospitals. In cases where patients have suffered unnecessary pain, avoidable complications, were not treated with an expected level of care or their treatment proved fatal, the hospital should be held responsible for their actions. Compensation can help alleviate the financial burden of suffering a long term or painful injury, or adjusting to life after a loved one has died. Holding those responsible accountable means there is less chance of such a scandal happening again.
