United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust
The investigation launched after the scandal at Mid Staffordshire Hospital has found that United Lincolnshire Hospital is one of 14 other trusts that have also had ‘higher than average’ mortality rates in recent years. A team of investigators have studied the hospital and have put in place strict instructions to help the Trust improve.
In what has been called the worst scandal in NHS history, the 14 NHS trusts have all undergone rigorous checks which have revealed poor patient care, mistreatment and neglect that have caused 20,000 unnecessary deaths over the last decade.
United Lincolnshire Hospitals Scandal
It is believed that over the past 10 years, there have been 1,800 more deaths than officials would have expected, according to the Dr. Foster Research Unit. Although mortality figures have improved in recent years, the hospital has had death rates which are significantly higher than the national average, according to the SHMI scale, which is serious cause for concern.
In addition to an investigation of fatalities, the hospital is also under scrutiny for failing to provide a basic level of care, struggling to keep waiting times to an acceptable level and causing suffering to patients on the wards. Just like the other hospitals, they United Lincolnshire has suffered from low staffing levels and external pressure, which has affected its ability to provide basic treatment and care.
Many patients have claimed for medical negligence by failing hospitals. Compensation can help ease the financial burden associated with an injury and can also go some way towards holding the Trusts responsible for their actions. Both the legal investigation and action from former patients means that hopefully checks will be put in place to ensure that the same errors will not occur within NHS hospital wards again.
