Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust, Essex
Colchester General Hospital is one of the 14 hospitals being investigated for serious failings in the way it treats its patients, particularly in regards to mortality rates, waiting times and the care of patients, especially the elderly.
Colchester General Hospital Scandal
The Francis inquiry, conducted by Robert Francis QC, reveals that Colchester Hospital had “higher than expected” mortality rates. There were 2,151 deaths at the hospital between July 2011 and June 2012, a figure which is 16% higher than what should be expected. The inquiry went on to suggest further investigations be conducted into the treatment and care of patients at the hospital.
Despite such figures, the trust itself painted a different picture of the hospital’s figures. It said that Colchester NHS Trust’s death rates have been falling year-on-year and that there had been improvements made to the overall patient experience. Using an alternative mortality indicator, they also stated that their mortality rates fell within the ‘expected range’.
The inquiry, triggered by the failings at Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust, has revealed that not only has Colchester Hospital been failing dramatically, it has also continued to cover up disturbing figures, which only adds to the scandal.
The real tragedy in this whole scandal remains in the pain and suffering caused to patients and their families – people whose illnesses went untreated or became worse because of long waiting lists, unnecessary deaths, and simply the loss of dignity caused by poor care.
Pursuing a claim for medical negligence can not only help patients and their families understand what went wrong, but can also get them an apology and compensation for any financial suffering caused by the trust. A successful claim may also help to ensure adequate checks are created so that the same mistakes are not made again.
