KEYHOLE SURGERY AND LAPAROSCOPY CLAIMS Over recent years the number of keyhole surgery and laparoscopy procedures has substantially increased however there has also been a dramatic rise in serious complications and fatalities. The majority of complications are on initial surgical entry, and most of the medical negligence claims concern damage to the bowel, injuries to blood vessels and the use of electrosurgery.
These procedures involve making small incisions to insert a miniaturised camera and insertion of the tools to perform the surgery. The first incisions have to be made blind without the benefit of the camera and at that point there is a risk of unintended physical damage. There are established protocols and subject to unusual anatomy, any injury at this stage may have been caused as a result of medical negligence.
