What is PRK and LASIK eye surgery?
PRK and LASIK are two of the most commonly performed versions of laser eye surgery, and are used to correct vision.
PRK was the first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction and has been in use since the 1980s. Since the development of LASIK (and LASEK), PRK is now primarily used to correct the eyesight of patients with very low prescriptions.
LASIK is the most common form of laser eye surgery currently in use in the UK. It is used to correct all but the very highest prescriptions.
What can go wrong?
As a rule, laser eye surgery is a very safe procedure with complications occurring in less than 5% of cases. However, if a medical professional makes a mistake the patient can be left suffering from:
- Partial or total blindness
- Scarring to the cornea
- Tearing or dry eyes
- Corneal ectasia, causing distorted vision, streaking and sensitivity to light
- Worsened long / short-sightedness
Make a compensation claim
If it can be shown that your doctor’s error was directly responsible for the complications you suffered following PRK or LASIK laser eye surgery, it is highly likely that you will be entitled to claim compensation.
